I choose models who interest me. This involves personality and other less tangible things as well as appearance. While some of my models fall within mass market definitions of beauty, others are less conventional in appearance. I'm especially fond of intelligent models who are willing to treat a shoot as a collaboration, and contribute creative energy to the process. If you do not have an online portfolio, please attach one headshot and one full body shot to the email. I work with professionals of all experience levels, as well as with amateurs.
Etiquette: In general, my approach during a photo shoot is casual and relaxed. While I can provide some guidance on posing, however I tend not to excessively "control" a shoot. In my opinion, spontaneous is better.
Clothing and makeup: Unless otherwise arranged in advance, I will assume that the model will take care of clothing and makeup. I am always happy to discuss clothing preferences, as long as you are able to communicate what might be available. For makeup, I prefer extremes: Either subtle or radical. I am always open to discussion of possible tfp/tfcd opportunities with makeup artists. I also do some makeup but I PREFER not to unless this is negotiated ahead of time.
Safety: Normally I'm happy to provide references upon request, or you may contact any of the models I've worked with.
It is considered an acceptable practice to bring a friend to a shoot as a chaperone. The best ones observe quietly and do not distract from the shoot. Friends are usually preferred to boyfriends or husbands because of the extra bit of emotional distance, but I understand that sometimes you'll need to take whoever is available and willing. Rude or controlling behavior will not be tolerated. It never hurts to have an extra set of eyes to watch for that out of place hair or to keep watch on spectators who may tend to gather at outdoor shoots in public places.
Nudity: I do not shoot nudes often and I usually only do them with models I have worked with a number of times. I do some implied nudity, but I find that clothes can leave a lot more to the imagination than just putting it all out there.
Age: I do not work with models under 18 without a parent or guardian present. All models under 18 must have parental consent to model and I would prefer to discuss the shoot with the model as well as the parent beforehand to assure that everyone is comfortable with the ideas and concepts. I prefer models 21 or over but will accept mature and responsible 18 to 20 year olds. I have worked with a number of models over 30, and in a couple of cases over 50.
Releases: I use a standard model release which I will ask you to sign. This simply establishes ownership of the original images, and clarifies the details of an agreement.
Travel: Travel is frequent but unpredictable and often on short notice. I will make special arrangements under special conditions.
Scheduling: My availability at this time are Saturdays and Sundays. I am willing to work with other schedules with enough advanced notice. Contact me for more details.
Please make every effort to arrive on time for a shoot. If you are caught in traffic or otherwise unavoidably detained, call with an estimated arrival time.
When a model is reliable and responsive, I will be happy to provide future references to that effect. In the event of a postponement or cancellation, monies paid are non-refundable, but may be applied to future photographic services, subject to date availability at the studio's discretion.
